Areas of interest

My research is focused on the intersection between science and technology. Science can help us build better technology and better technology can open up avenues of science which were not before possible. Work in my lab has been funded by The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, The British Academy, The Royal Society, Leverhulme Trust, EUROfusion and Facebook Reality labs.

Current projects include:

  • Multisensory Remote Telepresence: Using virtual reality and bimanual haptic robotics to improve how operators work in remote and challenging environments. Particularly within the nuclear fusion and decommissioning sectors. This work is in collaboration with
  • Adaptation to Temporal Delays in Virtual Reality: Examining how humans are able to adapt to temporal delays in virtual reality systems and how this adaptation influences feelings of ownership, agency and presence.
  • Predicting emotional responses in virtual reality: Using machine learning techniques to predict children and young adults’ emotional reactions to virtual reality content. Prediction is based upon physiological measures, eye tracking and low-level properties of the content.
  • Social Perception in Virtual Reality: This project is taking high-definition 3D scans of people and using these to examine the perception of faces, bodies and social interaction in virtual reality environments.
  • Perception of Stutters in Computer Games: Temporal stutters occur in computer games when the computer cannot keep up with rendering content on the computer screen or virtual reality headset. These detract from immersion. We are examining the factors which influence the detectability of temporal stutters.
  • Eyewitness Identification in Virtual Reality: Examining the factors that influence eyewitness identification under ecologically valid scenes (3D scans, 360 videos) in virtual reality.
