Areas of interest

My research focuses on two main areas: engagement with non-state armed groups and the human experience of war and political violence.

Drawing from conflict resolution and transformation frameworks, I research a variety of forms of engagement with non-state armed groups from negotiations to cooperation in governance practices. My research, publications and policy advisory roles have examined non-state armed groups in East Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia. I also research the extent and role of civilian agency in conflicts marked by terrorist violence and how to include civilian agency in conflict analysis and resolution.

I am particularly focused on developing impact pathways for my research and have advised defence, security, and foreign policy officials in national government (UK, Somalia, Kenya, Turkey, Pakistan), international organisations (various UN agencies and NATO branches) and non-governmental organisations. I work with several women’s grassroots organisations to support their work in conflict resolution and peace building, particularly in Kenya and Somalia.

My research on the human experience of war examines the place and impact of experiential knowledge on the study of war. Much of my work has relied on in-depth interviews and auto-ethnographic testimony of working on areas affected by conflict and political violence.

Postgraduate supervision

I am interested in supervising projects on political violence, conflict transformation, and experiential knowledge of war and conflict.

Background

Following a career as an international reporter working for French Television France 3, The Associated Press and Agence France-Presse, I returned to academia in 2003 to investigate the possibility of negotiations with non-state armed groups using terrorist violence. I completed an MA in Conflict Resolution at the University of Bradford and a PhD in International Politics at Aberystwyth University in 2010, completing a thesis on negotiations with the paramilitaries in Northern Ireland and with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in Mindanao.

Prior to joining the 国产内射, I held appointments at the University of Kent, the University of Queensland (Australia) and the University of Canterbury (New Zealand).
